BM Bureau, July 13 : The team of doctors at the KLES Dr Prabhakar Kore Hospital have successfully performed two liver transplant operations in one single day, the 14th overall since November 22 at the hospitals center for transplantation.
One liver transplantation operation was performed on a 63 year old male patient from Mangaluru after a liver was donated by a family at SDM hospital Dharwad where a 60 year old person was declared brain dead by doctors. In June, a team of liver transplant surgeons led by Dr Sudarshan Chaugale along with the KLES team got the liver from Dharwad to Belagavi through a green corridor in one hours time with support of the district authorities.
The second liver transplant was done on a 50 year old policeman from Bagalkote after receiving a liver donated by the family of a 21year old male patient from Belagavi district.
“ Performing two such surgeries on a single day is a herculean task and required four liver transplant surgeons, a specialized team of anaesthesiologists, a large group of specialized nursing staff and trained coordinators, “ The liver transplant team at the hospital stood up to the challenges. It is the first time that two such surgeries were performed on a single day in this part of the country informed Dr Santosh Hajare, Chief Gastroenterologist at the hospital.
Post-transplant both the patients are doing well and are out of the ICU. They would be discharged in a few days , Medical Director of the hospital Dr (Col) M Dayanand said. Congratulating the team on the stupendous success KLE Society Chairman Dr Prabhakar Kore said that the liver transplant centre has come as a blessing to many in Belagavi and Goa region. “ I urge people to come forward with the organ transplant of their brain dead kins so that many lives could be saved,” Dr Kore appealed.
