BM Bureau, Sept 13: Noted neuro and spine surgeon from Lakeview Hospital Dr Raviraj Ghorpade has performed a rare and complex surgery on a 15-year-old school boy to repair a penetrating spine injury. The boy was severely injured after he was struck by a javelin spear during a competition. The spear pierced his back and entered his spinal canal.
After primary treatment, the teenager underwent surgery at Lake View Hospital under Dr Raviraj Ghorpade performed the highly complex surgery to remove the bone piece that was into the spinal canal. The surgery was successful and the boy is walking with the help of a walker. He is expected to make a full recovery and resume his normal activities.
“This case is a reminder of the dangers of participating in sports that involve the use of sharp objects. Precautionary measures should be strictly observed. Penetrating spine injuries are serious hence it is important to seek medical attention immediately from an experienced Neuro Spine Specialist,” Dr Ghorpade ascertained. Penetrating spine injuries are caused by objects that pierce the skin and enter the spinal canal. These objects can include knives, bullets, and other sharp objects.
Penetrating spine injuries can cause a variety of injuries to the spinal cord, including paralysis, numbness, and weakness, Dr Ghorpade said.
